YEAR 1

Welcome to year one, our teachers are Miss James and Miss Broughton.

In year one, we work on developing and building on the foundation skills taught in Early Years. The children work towards the National Curriculum objectives during year one. Throughout the year, we build on developing the children's independence, provision areas are well planned, resourced and closely link to the themes of learning within the classroom, the provision areas support the development of both fine and gross motor skills. The children are given high quality teacher support in small groups, ready to further develop their independence as the year progresses.

Reading is vitally important across whole school but in particular, the children in year one will carry out a phonics screening check during the summer term. Teachers teach high quality phonics lessons effectively to support the children in preparation for the phonics screening check but also to prepare the children for reading and writing as they move through the school. In maths, the children build on their understanding of place value of numbers within 100. Our main aim is to develop independence, confidence, creativity and enjoyment.
