OPAL at Barry Primary
OPAL stands for Outdoor Play And Learning and it is fast becoming a huge part of life here at Barry Primary. We believe that all children need opportunities to play that allow them to explore, manipulate, experience and affect their environment. We believe play provision should be welcoming and accessible to every child, irrespective of gender, economic or social circumstances, ethnic or cultural background or origin, or individual abilities. Allowing all children the opportunity to play and explore in a way which suits them and aligns with our school values of creativity, respect, aspiration and enjoyment.
OPAL believes that “more active and creative playtimes can mean happier and healthier children, and having happier, healthier, more active children usually results in a more positive attitude to learning in school, with more effective classroom lessons, less staff time spent resolving unnecessary behavioural problems, fewer playtime accidents, happier staff and a healthier attitude to life."
What does play look like at Barry Primary?
Children are offered new challenges and are allowed to play with a range of equipment and resources. Play is enhanced through access to a range of equipment such as scooters, dressing up costumes, planks, crates and small world toys.
Our OPAL journey is still in its infancy and we are regularly updating our play provision to ensure that the children receive the best possible experiences for play.
