Mathematics
Barry Primary School embraces The National Curriculum as one part of the school curriculum and uses 'The National Curriculum' in England: mathematics programmes of study: Key Stages 1 and 2’ (2013) and the Early Years Statutory Framework (2014) as a basis for planning, teaching and to fulfill the government’s statutory requirements.
We believe that every child is entitled to a high quality mathematics education, which will provide a foundation for them understanding the world.
Our aim is that by the end of Year 6, our children will:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, have a well-developed sense of number values and know by heart key number facts, e.g. times-tables and related division facts and number bonds.
- Be able to use mathematical language to think and reason mathematically.
- Be able to solve problems by applying their understanding of mathematics.
- Be able to work both independently and in co-operation with others.
- Have a positive attitude towards mathematics.
- Be confident, resilient and take risks whilst having a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
Please see the school calculation policy.
We run a Target card system to support fluency and application of key maths facts. Each child works on a 'Target card' covering specific number targets, appropriate to their year group, that they can practise at home. In addition there is a parent handout, with activity ideas and useful websites for ideas on how children can be supported at home.
