At Barry Primary, we offer a curriculum which is broad and balanced and prepares our children to excel in life. It is our intent to ignite intellectual curiosity and equip children with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to thrive and succeed within today and tomorrow’s global society. We place great emphasis upon appreciation of past accomplishments whilst also looking ahead at the opportunities of the modern developing world. In doing so, we aim to inspire our children to shape a better world for the future.

Our curriculum intends to:

Provide a broad and balanced education for all pupils that is coherently planned and sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge for skills and future learning and employment.

Enable pupils to develop knowledge, understand concepts and acquire skills, and be able to choose and apply these in relevant situations with increasing confidence and independence.

Support pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Support pupils' physical development and responsibility for their own health, and enable them to be active.

Promote a positive attitude towards learning, enabling pupils to be pro-actively involved and acquire a solid basis for lifelong learning.

Ensure equal access to learning for all pupils, with high expectations for every pupil and appropriate levels of challenge and support.

Have a high academic/vocational/technical ambition for all pupils, providing every opportunity to develop pupils as problem-solvers, decision-makers and communicators of the future.

Equip pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to suceed in life.

To enable pupils to have respect for themselves and high self-esteem, and to live and work co-operatively with others, being able to distinguish right from wrong.

To understand Britain's cultural heritage to appreciate and value the contribution made by different groups in our multicultural society.

To help pupils understand the importance of truth and fairness, so that they grow up committed to equal opportunities for all.

Our Vision for the Barry Curriculum

“Together we care, learn and grow”

Our school ethos of CARE (creativity, aspiration, respect & enjoyment) is at the heart of everything we do and it sits centre-point of our motto.

At Barry Primary, we pride ourselves in offering an education that goes beyond the National Curriculum core skills and knowledge. It is of course essential that our children develop these core academic skills to prepare them for each stage of their education. It is equally important that our children develop as well-rounded young people prepared for life beyond school. We have high aspirations for our children and have designed a curriculum that looks at education in a broader sense. Our personalised school curriculum is built with four key drivers weaving throughout linked to our logo and motto.

Our four key drivers:

• Together: representing diversity within our curriculum in our strong multicultural community. In all curriculum subjects, diversity will be included and celebrated.

• We: inclusively ensure that all children receive the entitlement to progress. In all curriculum areas, we want every child to have inclusive opportunities.

• Learn: all children should learn the skills they will need to prepare them for a future world of study/work. Our curriculum strands are designed to equip children for their future.

• Grow: personal independence to enable our children to be prepared for life beyond school and to have the resilience and confidence to overcome barriers to be successful.
