Physical Education

At Barry Primary we recognise that a healthy and active child is a happy child and put Physical Education high on our agenda.

Our commitment to the children’s Physical Education is to ensure a fully inclusive approach, focussing on each individual’s strengths and areas for development. Weekly P.E, for those who do not take part in swimming sessions, consists of two sessions. One is a ‘Real P.E’ session, focussing on the development of physical literacy skills, mastering the fundamental movement skills and sport skills that permit a child to read their environment and make appropriate decisions. This allows them to move confidently and with control in a wide range of physical activity situations. The children’s second lesson then allows children to apply these to a variety of well-known games.

As part of our commitment to the children’s physical education we also provide a range of clubs either in-house or lead by outside agencies (often using our Sports Funding); this year includes dance, dodgeball, football, basketball, Change 4 Life and multi-sports.

At Barry Primary School we value the children’s need for a wide range of sporting experiences and are proud of our recent participation and successes in town and cluster competitions in a range of sports, ensuring that children of all abilities are involved.

Our Year 6 Keep Active Crew work with children across the school at lunch time, introducing them to new games whilst developing their physical literacy skills and ensuring an active lunch time.

Our sporting endeavours culminate in the annual sports days in July which encourage fun and competition for all children.

As part of our summer events, we have also started running an annual Race for Life event.

Last year, we were delighted to receive several sports awards:

  • Most Improved Sporting School
  • Sports School of the Year – Primary.

Mrs Claire Fleming, P E Co-Ordinator
